Black Lives Matter: Let’s Talk About Environmental Justice  — Clean Power Lake County

By Leah Hartung For environmentalism to be successful and complete, it must include social justice. Environmental degradation and climate change do not affect the population equally: The brunt of the burden falls on marginalized communities. With the Black Lives Matter movement sweeping the nation, sparked by the murder of George Floyd, it is necessary for […]

Farmers Fear the European Green Deal

Any cause of alarm?

Farmers Fear the European Green Deal

https://ift.tt/2AC7fKT

This article from AGWEB blasts the European Commission and their European Green Deal.

To put it bluntly:

The European Commission has a plan to eliminate modern farming in Europe.

The details emerged last month, as part of a “European Green Deal” announced late last year that calls for the continent to become “climate neutral” by 2050.

The commission speaks of “turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities.” It also talks about “making the transition just and inclusive for all.”

It should have added three words: “except for farmers.”

That’s because the EU Commission just released its “Farm to Fork” strategy, which is the agricultural portion of the European Green Deal. It announces a series of unrealistic goals: In the next decade, farmers like me are supposed to slash our use of crop-protection products by half, cut our application of…

Are Himalayan and Chinese Red Panda of different species???

Himalayan red Panda Photo: VPC Animals

Climate change and habitat loss are the main cause of dwindling red Panda populations! In-depth study of these animals has been carried out by Yibo Hu at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and suggest that the Red Pandas in China and Himalayans are of different species. Hu said that the variation in genetic makeup of these species happened around 200000 years ago and he suggested that avoidance of inbreeding while in captivity would help in conserving their genetic uniqueness. However, these results have been disputed by Jon Slate at the University of Sheffield in the UK who argued that the study did not consider all other pandas in Bhutan and India, More at https://www.newscientist.com/article/2235500-red-panda-genes-suggest-there-are-actually-two-different-species/

Conservation- Killing several birds using a single stone

A giant Panda, was once a flagship species in South China

Conservation of Flagship species such as pandas helps in protecting other species that are threatened within the same area. These are results from a study by Jennifer McGowan at Macquarie University in Sydney alongside her colleagues. The findings can help conservationists in deciding which flagship species to promote in order to spearhead conservation measures. However, these findings best advice conservation of the animal species rather than the invertebrates and plants. These results are currently significant especially for the ahead International biodiversity targets meeting that will be held in China on October.Read more at https://www.newscientist.com/article/2234833-keep-raising-money-to-save-the-pandas-it-helps-other-animals-too/
